Special Diets - High Protein, Low Fat, No Cholesterol

Expert: Chef Jenny Ross - 8/13/2009

Question
I am 41 and I workout.  A few months ago, my diet changed dramatically when I learned I had high cholesterol and borderline high blood pressure.  I now eat like a vegetarian who eats fish.  My goal is high protein, low fat / sat. fat, and no cholesterol.  I need snacks for work but my old protein bars are out - too much fat and cholesterol.  I also need more choices of fish.  Getting sick of Salmon.  Any ideas?
Thanks.

Answer
Hello Richard-
Well my ideas are all going to be along the vegan lines, specifically living foods, or foods that have not been cooked, preserving enzymes and nutriet value- The great thing is we use a lot of superfoods which for working out is great! Also living foods are very detoxifying which helps rid the bod of bad cholesterol and fats- bonus...
Anyways you might check out at your local health food store the following:

Hemp Seeds- high in omegas (like fish), chlorphyl and protein- I recommend adding to a daily smoothie- I recommend for many of our clients to start the day wiht a superfoods smoothie for great energy, clarity and healing in the body- plus if you make it your breakfast you are already comsuing 30% living foods in your daily diet. Try this smoothie:
Supergreen Smoothie (I know the spinach might seem strange but your can't taste it and you get all the benefits of it!)
1 Banana
1 Mango or 1 Cup Pinneapple
1 Cup Raw Spinach
1 Tbsp hemp seeds or hemp protein
2 Tbsp Agave Nectar (natural sweetener, low on glycemic index)
1 Cup Ice
Blend Well

Dark Leafy Greens- Kale, Collards and Spinach are rich in iron and protein and chlorphyl. Try them in salads or in sandwiches over iceberg or romaine even.

Nuts and Seeds are also great sources of nutrition and make a good pre-workout snack.

Other Superfoods Include-
-Spirulina- High in very bio-available protein
-Maca Root- High in Amino Acids good for the body in recovery from excersize, etc.
-Gogi Berries- high in vitamin C, A etc. - Good to add to granolas etc.

Sprouted Buckwhat Granolas- In the living foods sections of your local grocery store- VERY high in protein and no cholesterol, etc.

If you have any other quesitons, or if we can be of assistance in helping you locate any of these items, or if you would like to learn more about living foods (we just released a book called "The Art of Raw Living Food" please feel free to email me directly at Jenny@shop118degrees.com

Peace and Blessings
Chef Jenny
