Question
In Dr. Atkins book, he states that beta-blockers and diuretics could be the reason his diet doesn't work.  I take Atenolol, Enalapril Maleate and Hydrochlorothiazide.  Could either of these be the reason I do not lose on either one of these diets?

Answer
Portia,
None of these medicines interfere with the diet. Some older beta blockers like propanolol could potentially theoretically interact, but it's never been tested. Atenolol is a newer beta blocker that's specific for the heart, and doesn't affect the pancreas or liver.
If you are having trouble losing weight, I'd strongly recommend keeping a detailed food diary and counting exactly how many calories you're taking in. The reason Atkins works so well in many people is that it forces the generation of ketones, which are naturally very powerful appetite suppressants. Once people are through Induction, they find they're able to take in far fewer calories while still feeling satisfied. If Atkins isn't doing that for you, you might be resistant to the effect of the ketones and Atkins might not be the best diet for you.
