Special Diets - menopause and weight loss

Expert: Melissa Anderson - 11/19/2007

Question
I've been doing the LA weight loss diet with very slow success, then began menopause and seem to be going backwards...Is there a connection with weight loss or lack of and menopause..and what can I do...Help!!

Answer
Cindy,
As you age, and especially as you go through menopause, your basal metabolic rate (BMR) decreases. That's the number of calories you burn every day just by being alive. So if you continue to eat and exercise exactly the same, your weight loss will slow and eventually you'll gain, unless you either eat less or exercise more. In this case, exercise is a better bet, because you're just not burning as many calories as you used to. Keep at it, though-it can definitely be done. It just requires dedication, focus, and willpower.
Melissa
