AboutNatasha Veale, M.Ed., ABD Expertise I am certified to teach and have experience with students with learning disabilities, mental disabilities, and behavior disorders. My license is Cross-Categorical Special Education. I also specialize in the teacher education field. I can answer questions pertaining to teaching such students, as well as preparing adults to become special education teachers.
Experience I taught as a Special Education teacher in the public school system for 7 years prior to becoming a Research Associate and Adjunct Instructor at a local university in the Special Education department in 2007. I also teach special education courses to student teachers as an adjunct in the BS program.

Education/Credentials I have a BS in Education of the Deaf and Hearing Impaired, a second BS in Special Education, and Masters in Special Education. I am currently in a PhD program specializing in Special Education Leadership. I finished my coursework in April 2009 and am currently in the Dissertation phase of my program.
Question My child has been diagnosed ADHD. The school tells me that they can't just make modification in Science and Math where he is having problems. They would have to make modifications everywhere. He is in third grade reading at a 4.5 level so I don't want his reading assignments modified. But they say he will have to go to a lower reading group if any mods are made.
Answer Lewis, there are no legal requirements within Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act that restricts the realms of modifications. It does not say where a student has to have a modification. The team decides based ONLY on the child's needs and not what they are able to provide. For example, if a child is disorganized the team decides on a plan to help with organization. Your child needs help in Science and Math. That means the plan should only be made for the modifications needed in Science and Math.
