I also have contact with a woman on their management team, so I have access to information that others may not have access to.

Spice Girls - band

Question
Hi. I was wondering a couple things. 1) Were the good singers before they got together? 2) How did they get to sing so  well 3) how did they get a band? These are a lot of questions, sorry. But overall, i REALLY would like to know the 3rd question, thanx.

Answer
Hello Lindsay,

Here are the answers:

1.  They certainly were not good singers, although they were *capable* singers.  I've seen the audition tapes of Victoria, Mel B, and Mel C.  Victoria seemed okay, if not a little off-key, but she was already in another band at the time.  Mel B was okay too, she sung a deep song.  Mel C sounded the most talented, as her voice seemed strong and in tune.  But back in the early days, the girls certainly didn't know how to sing in tune with each other, as admitted by their first voice coach.  Also, Geri apparently couldn't sing in tune in those early days of the band.

2.  Simple: practice! :-)  The original mgmt team hired a voice coach for them, and they slowly increased and improved their vocal ranges, and also learned to sing in tune with one another.

3.  as far as I know, their mgmt team (at that time, run by Simon Fuller's 19 Management Company) auditioned or searched for band members.  The musical director was Simon Ellis, so after Simon was found, Simon Ellis probably helped find the other band members.  I would assume they contacted music agents as well as contacts that they already knew for able band members.  I don't think the Spice girls had much input in this, as they wouldn't have the knowledge needed nor the time to pick a decent band.

I hope this helps.

Have a good day,
Angie Hung
