Spices & Seasonings - chicken wings & food coloring

Expert: Renee Aun - 10/29/2008

Question
I want to use food coloring to dye chicken wings green for Halloween, & call them frog legs. Will regular food coloring work for this? And if so, should I put it in the coating mix or on the wings after they cook? Thank you so much.

Answer
Hi Jackie,

What a great idea!Regular food coloring was made for such things. You can apply the coloring directly to the coating by putting a few drops in at a time and mixing. If you are coating with flour it may be tricky because flour soaks up liquids quickly and makes a paste. If that is the case, coloring after cooking would work better. The coloring can be diluted in a bit of water and a small spray bottle that you can get from a dollar store can be used to "spray dye" the wings.

Have fun and Happy Halloween!
Warm Regards,
Renee Aun
