Spices & Seasonings - Cinnamon

Expert: Renee Aun - 9/28/2008

Question
I am very interested in Cinnamon. I have an addiction to cigarette smoking and I would really want to replace it with cinnamon, as it is one of my favorite spices. Recently, I heard about cinnamon sticks and that it could be in my mouth instead of a cancer stick. As you seem to know a lot about spices, my question is:

Are there commercial/non-commercial sticks I can buy without the harmful effects of coumarin and such?

Answer
Hi Gerard,

I've looked and looked and can not find any data about cinnamon being an alternative for nicotine. I did find that some people have used cardamom pods or cloves.

I see no problem with having a cinnamon stick in your mouth as a cigarette replacement. I've done it and my son loves to chew them. I have never heard of any bad affects from cinnamon. People use it in food every day. Think of how much cinnamon goes into your system from a cinnamon bun or cinnamon toast.

Yes, it does contain coumarin, but it is in it's natural state and not as concentrated as prescribed pill containing the substance. Coumarin is also found in licorice, strawberries, apricots and cherries. Now if you were going to light up the cinnamon stick there will definitely be adverse affects. LOL

Cinnamon sticks can be found in the spice section of your grocery store. Good luck with your quest.

Warm Regards,
Renee Aun
