Subject: Shoulder

Question
Since October 2007 i have been an active wrestler. I haven't really stopped playing soccer. Well, recently, I've notice extreme pain in my shoulder when moving my arm above my head, across my chest (to stretch) and moving it all the way in a circle.
when i place my hand on my chest, near the collar bone, it almost feels that there is some clicking and/or grinding. Also, it cracks all the time, when i am stretching to taking off my shirt.
I don't remember me doing anything to it, but i might of when i was wrestling. I don't think it would be dislocated because I have done that, and it was a lot more pain.
I started noting this pain when in like February, but i thought that since wrestling just ended in March, i could have recovery time, but nothing is working.
What could be wrong?

Answer
It sounds like you might have what's called a rotator cuff impingement syndrome. However, because you've previously dislocated your shoulder, I would suggest you get an MRI if you haven't already done so to rule out any other injuries. A painful shoulder with locking and clicking could be from a torn labrum which sometimes requires surgery.

If the MRI is normal, then you should start doing rotator cuff exercises to strengthen the muscles that stabilize your shoulder. You can get an evaluation done by a physical therapist and have him or her put you on a good program.
