Sports Medicine - Knee pain

Expert: Bryan Ruchin, PT, DPT, MSPT - 9/4/2009

Question
dear sir,
I am a resident of India ,18 years old, male. I have been doing weight training for about a year. About six months back during leg extensions my knee hurt just below the knee cap (exactly at the junction of shin bone and bottom of knee cap). The pain is moderate and it goes away after some time. It reoccurs when i climb down the stairs fast and it hurts a lot during leg extensions(last 30 degrees to be exact). It does not hurt while climbing up the stairs. What is the problem exactly? Please suggest me a rehabilitation plan to strengthen my knee and alleviate the pain. Also,I do partial squats with heavy weights. Should i do full squats? Please help.
Thank you

Answer
you either have some tendonitis, or possibly an ACL issue.  stay away from full leg extensions and full squats.  lessen the weights adn increase your reps for 2-3 weeks. build up the stability of your knee.  if it does not get better then, you need to consult your physician.
