Question My husband has started having pain in both knees after he plays basketball and also when he drives for more than an hour. He also has some chronic pain along one side of his body (back, neck, entire leg) and some foot issues as well.
He is 44 years and has a long history of ankle sprains and knee pain. He had terrible knee pain in his 20's but started lifting weights and "willed" the pain away?! He is about 6 ft tall in the 170's and plays basketball 2 times per week and is active around the house and with the kids but hasn't lifted weights etc. in many years now.
He went to the podiatrist more than a year ago because of a toe injury. The doctor said his feet and ankles were a mess and that he could need 5 different surgeries. The doctor also mentioned that one of Tod's legs seemed shorter than the other. Tod had an orthotic made and wears it some but not sure how much good it does. The orthotic is for the toe alignment not to address the leg length. He hasn't persued any surgery partially because we don't have great insurance and also the doctor couldn't promise great results with the toe??
I am afraid for the future - i want to be hiking the grand canyon when we are 60 but don't know how likely that is...
It seems that he probably has more than one problem but then again, I wonder what is related to what. If you were him (or me) what would you do in this situation? What type of doctors/tests etc. would you persue? Also, I am wondering if getting a heel lift for the shorter leg might be one part of the solution. If so, what kind of a doctor do you see for that. Thanks for your consideration. Laure
Answer Dear Laure,
This Chicago Podiatrist located in West Loop 60661,Roscoe Village 60618,Elmhurst 60126 & Bartlett 60103 says...
For your ankle & knee pain.....
Try to avoid the surgeries-unless they problem is progressive. The heel lift may improve some of the symptoms. You should ask the podiatrist on a follow-up visit. Perhaps a Chiropractic College might help with the back & not be too costly. The best doctor for limb-length is the doctor with the most training. The podiatrists at Anklenfootcenters.com are well trained in this aspect of orthopedics. An orthopedist who specializes in backs should also be good-but expensive without insurance. Whomever gives the best advice/diagnosis should probably prescribe physical therapy. If not covered by insurance-see if you can see the therapist on a negotiated rate to do and learn therapy exercises-hopefully in 2-3 visits. These exercises should be considered lifelong.
Hope This Helps!
