Sports Medicine/foam roller

Question
I run and use a foam roller mainly on my IT Band area of my legs twice a day. Recently I noticed some discomfort in my feet so I removed a few stretches I had been doing to my arches and plantar. It seemed not to have an affect on my feet. Is it possible that rolling of the outer leg from hip to knee could affect the feet?

Answer
Hi Len, In general, I would think there would not be any connection between ITB foam rolling & foot discomfort. However, if the foam roller "stuff" is new, or too aggressive it's not impossible ( for example, too much pressure on perineal nerve that runs outer knee area into foot). Back off the foam rolling for couple weeks then maybe reintroduce once/day & see.
Also possible foot discomfort related to overuse, plantar fascitis etc. Also make sure shoes in good shape.
Your history re foot concerns also relevant -if they've been of concern, see podiatrist familiar with runners - hope this helps, good luck.. Dr. Bob Weil
