Question
Hello: I had a bad fall and totally crushed and destroyed my Erector Spinea muscle. It is very atrophy. I am having trouble finding someone that knows what to do with this. I have a SI belt that somewhat helps to stabilize me, but the muscle keeps trying to do it's job, but is unable to and ends up in spasm, and gripping down on everything in it's vicinity, nerves, blood vessel what ever. This seems beyond physio, so who can help with this?

Answer
Dear Kaitlin,

This Orthopedic Chicago Podiatrist located in West Loop 60661,Roscoe Village 60618, Elmhurst 60126 & Bartlett 60103 says...
For your muscle spasms.
Try PRICE
Protect-Try moving in a different way that does not strain the muscle as much.
Rest-Speaks for itself-try to take a few days off and ice aggressively.
Ice-as much as possible-45 minutes on, 15 minutes off-several times a day-more if it's hurting.
Compress-A self stick Ace type wrap may help-add to the belt.
Elevate-At end of day and in bed, if it throbs

That said...... try another physio place that deals with these kind of injuries.
I would try to find a gentle exercise like Tai Chi or Yoga-which involves meditation, stretching & strengthening. Do very slowly, & if you irritate-do PRICE again.
If you are persistent & careful you should notice an improvement at week 3-4.
Make sure that there are no other hidden injuries of the lower spine-which would make your symptoms worse. If you suspect that, then a lower extremity orthopedic specialist or D.O. would be someone to consult.

Hope this helps.
Good Luck!
