Sports Medicine/Old Knees

Question
Hi Dr. Bib
I am 55, and about that much overweight! Three years ago I tore a meniscus playing soccer. It didn't heal, kind of came and went, so I decided to get it scoped out later this month.
The soccer team wants me back, and I am tempted. I am pretty good for an old fat guy ;-). I know It will take a few weeks to recover, maybe more considering my age and weight, and the fact I am a 'slow healer'.
Should I risk it and play, or be safe and gracefully retire? I am leading toward not playing, but am under pressure. Thanks!

Answer
Hi Bud- sounds like you're a real trooper but "few weeks" is no where near enough time to properly recover from meniscal knee surgery. Now, everybody is different & you might be the exception BUT... Consult with your surgeon of course, and the physical therapist who will rehab your knee, but my suggestion would be to properly rehab without the unrealistic time pressure-- give yourself couple months & THEN, if everything is going well... Come back sensibly.
ALSO - make sure you include prescription orthotics for the future. Good luck,... Hope this helps... Dr. Bob Weil
