Sports Medicine/Knee Pain- Is this an overuse injury?

Area of Knee Pain
Area of Knee Pain
Hello! I'm a 15 year old endurance athlete that competes in XC and runs all year round. I put in about 55-60 miles a week, and 70% is easy mileage. Since yesterday I've had an annoying ache/pain, mainly in my left knee, that hurts most when my knee bends, for example, when my running stride is long, or when my knees lift high when I run sprints. I'm just wondering what this could be. I have attached a picture showing where the pain is coming from. Thanks in advance!!

Hi Dustin- yes, very suspicious of overuse injury. you are really pushing the envelope with your year round mileage & doesn't sound like any breaks.  You can't go wrong seeing sports Orthopaedist  or therapist for eval. Since your discomfort is so recent, there is no "sudden trauma"-- some intelligent rest makes big sense. Take 5-10 days off running- do some cross training, - bike riding or walking, swimming etc. Consider some iceing 2xday 15min, maybe 2 ibuprophen ( if ok with parents), 2-3xday for 7 days. If good, GRADUALLY over few wks return to maybe 50% of normal intensity... If good for those few wks return to action.
If you have knee issue history .. Get evaluated for foot mechanics... Especially if you are still growing. Ck your shoes if worn down. Your picture could be tendinitis of outside knee ligaments-- get evaluated! Good luck,  Dr. Bob Weil
