Question
Hi Dr Bob
I am 55. Overweight, but until recently still a weekend jock. I recently had arthroscopic knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus suffered playing soccer. The doc said he did what he could but  there was  toonie (or silver dollar) sized area of arthritis there. Its been ten weeks and still very sore-I cant run for any length of time. In fact if I go for a run my knee is sore for days after. I have always been a slow healer however.
My wife says to hang up the runners and retire from sports, apart from maybe low impact stuff like ellipticals. Is she right?
Thanks doc, have a good summer eh!

Answer
Hi Bud- At least iniatially, your wife is right. Consult with your Dr. Regarding whether you have had enough healing time, physical therapy etc. Maybe you are pushing too aggressively, too soon. Be a walker for few months, & make sure you've properly rehabbed, mix in some cross training- elliptical, bike etc. Don't try in push through pain- not smart. Consider prescription foot orthotics from podiatrist - often they are extremely helpful with knees. Considering your surgeon's observation regarding erosion of the cartilage, your competitive soccer or other running activities might be over or limited. After enough sensible time, you'll see how you feel & go from there -
Get those opinions- your Dr., physical therapist ... ETC.. Slow healer?-- You're probably pushing too much!  Back off & see how you do.  Hope this helps, Good luck.. Dr. Bob Weil
