Sports Trading/Collect Cards - 1955 Topps baseball card question.

Expert: Normand - 4/22/2009

Question
Why does the 1955 Topps baseball cards refer to the Washington Senators as the Washington Nationals.  The Bowman 55's correctly call Washington the Senators.

Thanks for any enlightenment you can provide.  Harry

Answer
Aloha Harry,

Thanks for the question and for using AllExperts.com.

Great Question!  I was stumped!  After doing some research and speaking with my colleagues, the reason the 55 Topps cards state "Nationals" is because they were produced before the licensing agreement for the "Senators" changed.  It is not uncommon, even today, that companies make and issue cards before all the "i's" are dotted and the "t's" are crossed.  Lastly, it was not cost effective for the company to "redo" the set because of a few cards.

Bowman issued their cards after the licensing agreement was signed hence the "senators".

By the way, all cards stated Senators in 1956.

Hope this helps.
