Question
My daughter took springboard diving lessons at 8 & 9 years old and truly loved
it.  We have moved from the Fresno area to the Monterey peninsula and are
having trouble finding a place that gives lessons. Any suggestions?  Or can you
recommend a summer diving camp in the Central California area? Thank you for
your help.

Answer
Liz -

You have moved to an area that in the past has not had a lot of diving opportunities for kids your daughters age. High school and Junior College diving are popular in the Monterey area but not much interest by coaches in providing lessons for younger kids. The only person I know who has done this in the past is Joan Pegoda, the coach at Cabrillo College in Aptos. There may be someone at U.C. Santa Cruz. They have a beautiful diving pool overlooking Monterey Bay. There is, I have heard, a good high school coach at Soquel H.S.

For summer camps, I do not know of any in the Central Valley so the closest pools to you with diving programs are in Santa Clara County. Try the Santa Clara Diving Team in Silicon Valley. Go to
www.santaclaradiving.com and contact Pat Haley. He is an old coaching friend of mine and can fill you in on his summer camp programs.(I coached the Santa Clara Divers from 1980 to 1997).There is also a good program at Stanford University but I do not know if they are doing a summer camp. Coach Ryan Wallace may be able to give your daughter some private lessons by arrangement. He can be reached at 650-793-2371. I used to coach Ryan when I was at De Anza College in Cupertino. If you call him, mention my name and I am sure he can help you.

Good luck with your pursuit of this great sport.
