Springsteen, Bruce - Clarence Clemons & the Red Bank Rockers

Expert: Seth Brahler - 12/8/2008

Question
Springsteen wrote "Summer on Signal Hill", recorded by Clarence Clemons and
the Red Bank Rockers, also by Killer Joe. In the Killer Joe sleevenotes, Max
Weinberg claims that the E Street Band never recorded the song. So, who plays
on the Clarence Clemons version?

Answer
For years I was fooled too.

I know John Landau's brother David was in the Rockers, but I am not too familiar with the rest of the lineup. It's hard to believe the E St. Band did not play on it. It's so good, and it really sounds like them. Which makes sense, b/c Bruce did write it, but even when you pass a piece of music on, the receiving band's version always sound different.

There is a nice writeup about it online.
