Answer The name Mary is a very traditional name to use when writing rock songs, and Bruce is steeped in tradition.
In the early eighties the National Organization for Women sued Springsteen for his derogitory lyrics about women. They took offense to the use of "baby" and "babe" as a reference to women. It was thrown out of court b/c that is a traditional word in rock songs. That's just another example of tradition.
