Question QUESTION: I live in the central valley of Calif. and want to know when to plant hard shell goards, how deep and how for apart. I read your answer on soil ammendments for gourds and it was very helpful. Thanks!
ANSWER: Gourd seeds should be planted one inch deep and 2 feet apart. This is true for all members of the squash family. Another option is to grow them vertically on a trellis or pole. This saves space, allowing planting every 1 foot, and also improves circulation.
Good luck, and please write again if I can ever be of assistance.
Regards,
Mike

QUESTION: Still don't know if I plant them in the fall or spring as my seeds are not in a package. I harvested them from dried gourds. Thanks!
Answer Susan, sorry about that. You sow the seeds directly into the garden one week after your last expected frost date next spring. I know you live in California, so this may not even be an issue. If your area does not get frost, then wait until temperatures stay consistently above 70F in the day, and 55F in the evening. If you do get frost, attached are two links that will give you the last expected frost date for your area and recommended planting dates for every vegetable.
