Square Foot/Intensive Gardening - planting gourds

Expert: Mike Mascio - 9/14/2008

Question
I live in the central valley of Calif. and want to know when to plant hard shell goards, how deep and how for apart. I read your answer on soil ammendments for gourds and it was very helpful. Thanks!

Answer
Gourd seeds should be planted one inch deep and 2 feet apart. This is true for all members of the squash family. Another option is to grow them vertically on a trellis or pole. This saves space, allowing planting every 1 foot, and also improves circulation.

Good luck, and please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
