Square Foot/Intensive Gardening - Shipping Passion Flower Suckers

Expert: Mike Mascio - 5/5/2009

Question
Hi Mike,
I have a large patch of passion flowers, the wild Maypop type, growing in my pasture here in Eastern Oklahoma (zip 74462). In the last week or so they have started sprouting up from the ground &  are now approximately 5" - 12" tall. What is the best way to dig up & ship some of these sucker plants without them wilting too much? Could I ship them barerooted in peat moss & a plastic bag or would they need to be potted? They will be shipped by Priority Mail with an average 2-3 day delivery time. Thank you very much for your time.

Answer
I would definitely ship them in a light-weight clear plastic filled with peat moss. Just make sure the peat moss is dampened before packing. The plastic will hold in the moisture. If the shipping time is only 2-3 days, they should be just fine.

Good luck, and please write again if I can ever provide assistance.

Regards,

Mike
