Square Foot/Intensive Gardening - Skunks

Expert: Mike Mascio - 10/7/2007

Question
During the last three weeks. skunks like to visit my front yard and dig up my lawn and make a lot of holes. How do I prevent them from coming back aside from building up a long fence along my front yard.
I plant tomatoes, basil, string beans, egg plants and chayote in my front yard this year.

Answer
Jasper, skunks are attracted to grubs in the soil. They will dig verociously when they find them in the lawn.

Grubs are the larvae of Japanese Beetles. They feed on the root system of the lawn.

Grub-ex is by far the best product on the market for an immediate resolution. The problem with this product, as well as diazinon, is that they are only effective the year they are applied. The problem will most likely reoccur next year, making this a very expensive proposition. They also are harsh chemicals that will kill off beneficial insects as well. I would never apply either product in the vegetable garden due to their toxicity.

The best natural control for grubs is Milky Spore. This is an organic product which kills only the grubs, while sparing earthworms. Another benefit to milky spore is that it lasts for up to 15 years without needing to be reapplied. The only downside is that it can be costly.  But given the fact you only need to apply it once every 15-20 years, it is the least expensive alternative over the long term.

Attached is a website which will give you additional information, as well as a source from which to purchase the product.

Good luck, and please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
