About Frank and Vicky Giannangelo
Expertise
We will research and answer all questions about organic gardening, soil building, square foot gardening, composting, mulching, planting techniques, sustainable gardening, sustainability, garden design, and how to create a simple reflection pool to attract birds and wildlife. Over the years we have learned that plants respond to the garden's aesthetics, soil conditions, and the attitude of the gardener. The healthier the soil and soul, the healthier the plants become, and are therefore more able to resist insect attacks.

Square Foot/Intensive Gardening - mulching

Expert: Frank and Vicky Giannangelo - 7/8/2007

Question
have were given wood and branch chips, quit a lot of it.
we put this in the walk ways of our garden.
now we have been told it may have too much acid in it.
im just wondering if we should put lime on top of this when it starts raining?
if that would take some of the acid out?

Answer
If you are just walking on it in a path it does not matter at all, and if it is acid, it will help to reduce weeds if your soil is acid too.

If you are worried about runoff from the path over into your soil, or if you are using it for milch (it makes a great mulch) and your soil is already acid, yes add dolomite lime around the edges.  If your soil is alkaline, it will be great for the soil.

Make sure there are no cedar chips mixed in with it, as they contain a resin toxin that is deadly for plants.
