Stained Glass - assembly of very large window

Expert: Sue Spire - 10/20/2009

Question
I have been asked to do a 52" x 40" window. I have never done a window quite that large before, the biggest size I've worked on is 44" x 26". I've always only worked with copper foil in the past. I was wondering if a panel that size needs to be leaded or is it still possible to use copper foil for assembling. And How do assure its strength. Should I be sure to use  a rebar strip across the back of the panel?
Thanks for your suggestions!
Lori

Answer
Hi Lori,

Yes, you can construct your window using copper foil. To insure strength, use copper restrip anywhere there is a hinge joint or even a hint of a hinge joint. Make sure the strips go from one edge of the panel to the other edge without interruption. If there are places where a vertical strip crosses a horizontal strip, one piece will have to be cut to allow the other to pass through. They will join together when you solder the panel. Going edge to edge will make it possible for the restrip to be firmly soldered to whatever you use around the edges. When finished, you will have a very solid window.

Depending on where the window will be installed, you might want to put a rebar across the back. However, if it is going to be in a secluded area, where it won't be affected by wind, slamming doors, etc, a rebar probably won't be necessary.
