Stained Glass/copperfoiling mirror

Question
Hi there:  I recently got a pattern for black glass, a mirror, and a nice bamboo spray.  I cut it carefully, sprayed the mirror with a stabilizing spray, foiled the whole thing and patina-ed it.  I was really pleased with the results.  However, when I put it in a sunny window, I got a brown stain under the silver of the mirror.  It seems to be caused by the sunlight or mild heat from the sun, 'cause it didn't happen to the other panel that is hanging on a pastel wall (no back light). How can I prevent the stain.
Thank you.
Rick.

Answer
I am not sure what you mean by "stabilizing spray". But whenever you cut mirror you need to paint over the cut edges. You can use special "mirror" paints, spray paint or nail polish. You should also protect the back of the mirror as it scratches easily. The staining comes from the infiltration of flux, patina or window cleaner. The liquid penetrates the area between the clear glass and the painted rear surface and attacks the mirror coating.
