Stained Glass - Beveled Glass top of Coffee Table

Expert: Kent Lauer - 5/8/2009

Question
I chipped about 1 inch off the corner end edge and wondered if this can be cut/ground off and still retain
the beveled edge?

And if so, is it very expensive?  Also who would do this
type of work?

Answer
Hi Barbara,
If the chip is underneath the bevel, then it might be able to be smoothed out, without losing the bevel. But you have to realize that to smooth the chip away is removing even more glass, and where it was ground and polished away may be more visible than the chip was in the first place, not to mention the cost of the repair. Depending on the shape and thickness of the glass, it might be more expensive to repair it than to get a new top. Call around to local glass shops and see if you can find out who does the machine beveling for them, that's the place that might be able to either cut it shorter and put on a new bevel, or repair the chip.
  Best regards,
      Kent
