Stained Glass - Copper braid for edge finishing

Expert: Sue Spire - 5/30/2009

Question
I've read your piece on using copper wire to strengthen the edges. Very well written - thanks.  I was wondeing if the copper braid I've seen is easier to work with. I have done a fabulous cross that is a bit awkward because the ends are flared and have cuves and the rose petals and leaves protrude from the edges of the cross also. It is about 16 inches tall so I'm afraid foil edging alone is not going to be sufficient over time. The edges are too curvacious to use zinc came edges.  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Georgia,

The copper braid will be fine as long as it's narrow enough. You don't want it sticking out beyond the edges of the cross. You could also use 20 or 22 gauge wire. It is easier to work with than the 18 gauge I used in my tutorial.

If you use wire, just tack it on in in a few spots or hold it in place with wooden spring type clothes pins. That way you will be able to manipulate the wire without pulling the foil loose in the process. Once the wire is in place and to your liking, then you can bead solder over it.
