Question Hi,
I recently bought an antique window that is leaded, but has clear glass. Some fool painted over the leading with white paint years ago. I want to clean the paint off, but I am not sure how to go about doing that with out harming the glass and leading. Do you have any ideas?
I appreciate your time!
Melissa Martin
Answer Dear Melissa,
Since the glass is clear glass and there is not a question of painted glass being unstable, you have a bit more freedom to clean the lead came. Do however, take care not to scratch the glass while cleaning the came.
A few things that may work are; 1. dampening a rag with turpentine in an attempt to wipe off the paint. 2. fine steel wool or a small wire brush. 3. some combination of the two.
As I do not know the age or condition of the panel, just take care when trying to remove the paint and try not to get too aggressive with it.
