Stained Glass - 'sickness' removal from glass items

Expert: Kent Lauer - 7/12/2009

Question
Hi, I have several glass items that have been dug up from Victorian rubbish tips. Some of these have sickness on the surface and I wondered if you could recommend a way to cure this. These items are complete and have survived being thrown away all those years ago, I would like to restore them.
Thank you in advance.

Answer
Greetings Laure,
The "sickness" that you are writing about is I'm quite sure, mineral deposits from rainwater, or other chemicals that have stained or even eaten into the surface of the glass. The best thing to try is something that takes away those deposits. There is a product in the US called CLR (Calcium, Lime and Rust Remover) and I'm sure you have something similar available to you.
Hope this helps, and if you send some pics I might have some other ideas about how to clean the pieces up.
      Cheers,
        Kent
