Stained Glass - lead versus zinc in antique window repair

Expert: Chester Reinhardt - 8/25/2009

Question
I have been asked to repair some antique leaded glass windows.  The glass size is approx. 15 x 32 inches.  I am all prepared to do the restoration using lead.
However, the home owner wants the entire window to be redone in zinc.
Would you do it this way?  Please give me the pros and cons so I may discuss this with the customer to give him correct information regarding this project.
They are exterior windows.
My thought was to do them in lead and have them encapsulated and sealed.
Thank you for your time.

Answer
hello mary the choice depend's on the shape of the glass pieces if there are tight turn's and curvesthen zinc will not conform.by the size i presume they are sidelites.if they are straight lines such as diamond's zinc will work.either way they will need rebar.they can be done in lead and properly cemented.a lot of old leaded window's bulge and sag because the lead came was not properly streached before using.if done in zinc they still need to be cemented.i prefer copper foil for all my new work.let me know how it work's out
