Question I have a piece of antique stained glass that is 14" x 50" that I want to put in an exterior door. It was in a wood frame with small nails and glazing compound. After sanding away the glazing compound and removing the nails, much of the exterior lead has deteriorated (or was sanded out with the glazing compound. How would you suggest we repair that? Also, how would you suggest we reinforce the glass so that if (when) my dogs hit it or a hurricane comes (I'm in FL), it will not break. Thanks tons!
Answer hi candi first the remaining lead on the border should be removed.you will have to trim all the lead lines back but before you do this' go to a stainsd glass supply store and buy new lead came to replace the one you took off.i would buy zinc came it is much more rigid and will give it more strenght.as for reinforcing.i would put plexi glass on both sides of the window if you have dog's pushing on it or high wind's no amount of reinforcing of the glass itself will stop damage from dog's or high wind.seeing that the window is 50 inches tall i would install [solder] to the lead brace bar;s every 18 inches these are also available at stained glass supply shop's.if there are no shop's near you.there is delphi stained.com you can get it there.hope this help's
