Stained Glass/Repairing a Stain Glass Shade

Question
I found a beautiful stain glass lamp shade at a garage sale. It's fairly old. It's the type of lamp from the 60's that you hang from the ceiling from a hook. It had a long chain with the cord threaded through it. The lamp itself had been pulled away from the light fixture. I would like to turn this into a table lamp. There is a small portion of leading that is missing on the top. Is there a way for me to resoder this piece to make it into a table lamp? I am a novice. Thanks, Cyndi

Answer
Dear Cyndi,
Yes, you can probably re-solder the lead back on. Wire brush it first to remove the corrosion. Depending on the condition of the lead it may not take solder. If that is the case, you will have to take it to someone with more experience.
There is a 'ring and wheel system' for lamp shades that works good for retro-fitting a shade to a lamp base. It comes in limited sizes. The top opening of your shade may or may not be a compatable fit. Check with your supplier.
Good luck.

Visit our web site at www.churchwindows.net. I can answer questions about restoration and repair of stained glass windows and their surrounds. I can, also, answer technical questions regarding matching old glass, glass painting (kiln-fired), waterproofing panels (cementing), re-inforcing, removal, and installation. I can not answer questions on glass casting, Dalle de Verre, or glass blowing.
