Question
QUESTION: Hi Todd, I have brown laminate floor in my livingroom. I noticed that everytime I clean it with laminate floor cleaner, it leaves streaks on the floor. The other day I decided to mop the floor with a string mop and hot water. I made sure the mop had no excess water, and it left the floor very clean and with no streaks. But is it ok to clean laminate floor with water? can it damage the floor? what type of laminate floor cleaner  can I use that won't leave streaks. what is the proper way to clean laminate flooring?

ANSWER: Elsa,

It is OK to use water on a laminate floor as long as you're careful.  You have to make sure you don't get it overly wet or leave it wet for more than a couple minutes.  The floor has no problem with water, but you want to make sure no water gets under the floor.  As long as you're careful about excess water and drying it quickly, you won't have a problem.

QUESTION: If I were to use floor cleaner for laminate, is there one in particular that you would recommend?

Answer
Elsa,

The great thing about laminate floors is you can't really damage them , unless you overwet them.  And you really have to overwet them to cause damage.  We had a hot water heater flood over our floor and it buckled for a day, and then went back to normal after it dried.  Obviously, you can't count on that happening but these floors can take water as long as they have been installed properly and no water gets under the floor.  As far as a specific cleaner, different cleaners work better on some floors than others.  Try a couple different ones.  Some cleaners will streak some floors and not others.  There a many conditions that can affect how cleaners work, so try a couple different ones.  Again, you won't hurt the floor as long as you don't spill a bucket of water on it and then leave it.
