Stains, Mopping, Wiping, Ironing, Cleaning - Dog urine on hand made persian rugs

Expert: Todd Malin - 5/14/2009

Question
Do you have a remedy to remove dog urine from my hand made
persian wool rugs?

Answer
HI Shirley,

It is very difficult to remove urine from any kind of wool rug.  There are a few things to try.
First you have to rinse the urine out the best you can.  If you have a wet vac it would help.
Either way take a 16oz spray bottle and fill it with a warm water.  Put just a couple drops of non-bleaching liquid laundry detergent in it and shake it up.  Spray the solution lightly on the area and take a white dry towel and put it on the spot and step on it.  If you have a wet vac use this to extract the area.  Make sure you do not rub the spot.  You also may want to make sure the rug is colorfast by testing a small area first.  After you do this, take some white vinegar, put it on a white towel and blot the area.  The vinegar helps to reduce yellowing from the urine.  It often doesn't work right away, so put the vinegar on there and leave it for a day or two.  You can repeat the vinegar treatment every couple days until you see it's not getting any better or it's gone.
