Stains, Mopping, Wiping, Ironing, Cleaning - Musty smell in flat

Expert: Bern - 5/22/2009

Question
We have recently bought a flat and noticed no musty smell when looking
around. However, we now notice an odour  at the top of our stairs to our
hallway. The strange thing is that after about 5 sniffs, we can't smell it
anymore and this is making it difficult to locate where it is coming from. The
hallways is near the bathroom but we have sniffed all the carpets and the
bathroom and can't smell anything!! Have you got any ideas about what we
can do?? Thank you so much!
Lucy

Answer
It's possible that what you are encountering is a smell simply from your flat being closed up in between residents.  If you can get a dry day air it out well, if not try using a dehumidifier. If you have air conditioning THAT will help remove moisture in the air. Get a moisture detector for the carpeting  to assure there are no damp spots in it.  Really until you can come up with a source for it there's not much you can do except try to dry the air and use an odor eliminator that will get rid of the objectionable smell.  STILL I go back to the idea that it's probably transitory and as you stay longer the odor will leave on it's own.  The fact that it is only detectable for a short period of time makes me think this even more.
