Question QUESTION: There is a present and ever growing carpet stain in our livingroom, against a north facing wall on either side of the fireplace and beyond. Assuming we had a water issue, we pulled up the carpet to find the sub floor and mat totally dry underneath. Where heavier objects sit on the carpet, there is no stain underneath although stains are present under lighter objects.Let me also mention no stain removers have been used, no pets are in question, it is a no traffic area and it was professionally steam cleaned 5 years ago. Any ideas?
ANSWER: What does the stain LOOK like. Brown, gray, yellow? Also does it LOOK like water flow? Is there an odor?

QUESTION: It looks like a water stain. It is a brown stain (beige carpet) The edges of it are scalloped, if feels slightly damp to the touch and it does not smell. The underside of the carpet looks normal...and no, the roof isn't leaking :) It does feel slightly greasy, as in you feel a very slight residue on your hand if you touch it.
Answer I could probably give you a better guess if I was looking right at it. (feel free to attach a photo) but my best guess is a leak along the side walls of the chimney. It really does seem like some kind of water is getting on it. OR a pet urinating on it but you said you have no pets. OR DID YOU? You just said no pets in question. I'm, intrigued. You say no stains under heavy objects. Does this mean the stain goes right up TO the heavy object and then goes around it? Is there a smell?
