Stains, Mopping, Wiping, Ironing, Cleaning - rug cleaning

Question
A friend gave me a beautiful and expensive wool area rug when she moved:unfortunately it smells like cats and is covered in hair! Help please!!!

Answer
Assuming you want to do this yourself....  go to PETCO or a similar store and get a urine neutralizer.  Vacuum the rug very very well and if necessary use a pet hair remover on it.  KEEP IN MIND wool is just animal hair so some of what you see could be shedding by the rug itself.

Next clean the rug using a cup of white vinegar to a gallon warm water using a spray and extract machine. Depending on the size of the rug you may want to use hand tools with the machine.  After cleaning apply the urine treatment.  Suspend the rug off the floor to dry.

If worst comes to worse, you can leave the rug suspended outside for the rain and the sun to work on it.  I've done this is situation where nothing else has worked and had it be successful.  Mother Nature is a pretty good cleaner, herself.
