Stains, Mopping, Wiping, Ironing, Cleaning - Removing body oil

Expert: Todd Malin - 8/16/2009

Question
We have a cherry headboard as a part of our bedroom set.  Body oils from top of our heads and even hands are on the headboard.  Do you know of way to remove the body oil?

Answer
Mary,

You have to use a solvent to remove oil.  It's really difficult to remove if the oil has built up for a while.  Try taking a white towel, put some acetone on the towel and very gently rub(as if you were dusting) the affected area.  You have to be very careful with any solvent.  Don't use too much to start with and make sure you are very gentle.  It dries very quickly, so if the spot is not out you can repeat after a few minutes.  Keep checking the towel to see if dirt is coming off.  If no dirt is coming off, stop.  Make sure you use the acetone in a ventilated area.

I'm assuming the oil is on fabric, not the cherry wood.  If it's on the wood resend the question because solvents will remove the finish from wood.

Todd
