Stains, Mopping, Wiping, Ironing, Cleaning - Cigarette smoke stains

Expert: Todd Malin - 9/1/2009

Question
We purchased a home and the white woodwork (gloss finish) is stained yellowish from nicotine smoke.  What do you recommend?

Answer
Bea,

The only way to get rid of the marks is to re-paint over them.  The nicotine penetrates the wood.  Your best bet is to sand them, treat them with a sealer (like Kilz), and paint them.  That will also take care of any smell you might have.

Todd
