Stains, Mopping, Wiping, Ironing, Cleaning - newsprint stain on wood

Expert: Todd Malin - 9/29/2009

Question
Dear Todd
I have an antique pine coffee table. Newspaper was put on it to protect it in storage.  I'm left with two patches of the transferred ink that need removing. I'd like your advice so that I dont spoil the surface. thanks,Jean

Answer
Jean,

It depends on what kind of finish is on the table.  It's going to be very difficult to remove the ink without damaging the finish or the wood.  Solvents like acetone are the best way to remove ink, but if there is any kind of solvent based finish(which most finishes are), it will damage the finish.  If there is no finish on the table, the solvent will not hurt the wood.  Otherwise you're going to have to lightly sand the area where the ink is and try to restore the finish in those spots.

Hope this helps,

Todd
