Stains, Mopping, Wiping, Ironing, Cleaning - laminate floors

Expert: Randy Leighty - 7/23/2006

Question
I recently moved into a home with laminate flooring.  Not knowing I couldn't I used a swiffer wet mop on it and it lost it shine and that slippiness it had originally.  Is there any way to get that back.  I use water from my fridge door now that is filtered and the shine is back somewhat but not that smoothness.  Is there anything to get that back.  Thank you

Answer
Howdy, Janene.

Actually, I see no reason why you can’t use the Swiffer product you mention. In fact, we use one on our wood laminate at home. Did you get some information that says you should not use such a cleaning aid on your laminate? If so, I would consider either the advice or the flooring product to be suspect.

I suspect the issue you are experiencing is not related to the Swiffer per se, but rather a function of too much cleaning product and/or a pad that’s too wet to dry to a streak-free surface. I’d like to refer you to a previous question at:

I suggest you use the approach outlined in this question to zero in on your specific problem.

While there is nothing wrong with using your filtered fridge water, be aware that it probably still has some mineral content. It may or may not be sufficient to conduct the tests I’ve suggested.

As far as the “slippiness” that you mention, I’m not sure I understand exactly what you mean. I’m guessing, however, that the change in “feeling” is the same detergent residue that is impacting your shine.

If you can confirm that product residue, you can continue to use the Swiffer. As I’m sure you know, some of the cloths are wetter than others. When one is too wet, just let it dry out before you use it.

There is also a tool called a “Schmop” (at least I think that’s how you spell it). Essentially, it’s a glorified wet-cloth mop with a fluffy dust-mop style head that absorbs the moisture back as you are mopping. You can achieve the same result by attaching a nice terry towel to your Swiffer handle and going back over the floor.

Good luck, and let me know how things work out.
