Stamps (Philately) - 1 cent American Kestrel w extra light bkgrd
Expert: Mark Leon - 11/3/2009
Question Hello, I have 8 one-cent stamps that seem to have been slightly misprinted. I suspect that somehow a color run was skipped....wish I still had the entire sheet! The background which should be soft yellow/tan is a very light grey; plus the plumage on the bird and the branches is much, much lighter.
Does this apparent mistake make the stamps more valuable? If so, by how much (approximately)? Is this sort of mistake in color rare in US stamps? Many thanks!
Answer Sharon,
There is a market for error stamps, but it is highly speculative. In general, the more dramatic the error, the more an EFO (error, freak and oddity) collector is willing to pay to get it.
I recommend you contact at least two US error stamp dealers for an opinion:
Steve Crippe at freakystamps.com
Jack Nalbandian at nalbandstamp.com
When you contact these or other dealers about your stamps, it would be very helpful to have a clear digital photo to email them.
Good luck!
