About Mark Leon
Expertise
I am a collector of United States postage stamps, and also a stamp dealer. I`m a member of the American Philatelic Society (APS). My principle area of interest and expertise is in United States Stamps.

Experience
I've been selling stamps on the internet since early 1996. I maintain a stamp web page that concentrates on mint US stamps issued generally between 1890 and 2004. I'm an active seller on ebay.com since 1996, under the user id "mleon". I have a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, 1984. You can find my web page at http://www.forwardedge.com/usmints.html

Question
My grandfather left me a big stamp collection.i just read you wrote that The Official States of the Union Historic Stamp Collection sold for as much as $3000. and i have one of those that are all unused. as well as many more full collection books that are unused. i have a great amreican george washington 2c stamp with the issue date 12-10-1926 with an unused stamp and the 22kt gold replica as well as the heritage of america stamp collection complete set. these are just a few i have ALOT of stamps.what do think these are worth? these are in mint condiction. my grandfather was a postmaster for 30 years. what is the best way to get the top dollar out of these? Thanks John

Answer
John,

I don't remember writing such a statement of value for what you describe.  I suggest looking up the value of some of your stamps at your local library.  Ask at the reference desk for the Scott Specialized Catalog of United States Stamps and Covers.  There you will find photographs and current values for every United States stamp ever issued, sorted by date of issue.

You won't find values for gold replica stamps, as they were not issued by the post office.  I've seen gold replica stamps sell on eBay in the $1 to $5 range apiece.

Unless you find some very valuable stamps among the collections, the most likely venue to attain top dollar for your holdings is eBay.com.  Informative descriptions of the collections and how they were formed, plus many clear digital pictures, will help yield the best results.

Good luck!
