Question
I have an 1898 internal revenue documentary stamp. It is red with a ship on it and has the date wrote in pencil on it Dec.1898. Can you please tell me what it is worth. Thanks

Answer
Doris,

My best guess without a picture is that you have the 2-cent carmine rose revenue stamp frequently called a "battleship revenue" after the picture on the stamp (not after its use).  Retail value is currently listed between 25 and 30 cents.  These stamps collected revenue taxes that helped pay for Union side of the Civil War.
