1. Can Stamp Collection be considered as a good Project Assignment work for School Children ?

2. Do you feel if considered as a part of project assignment,
ages 11-13 would be the most appropriate ages for school children ?.

My Opinion
----------

Stamp collection will add General Knowledge. So it will be useful if taken as part of a project work along with taken as a hobby.

ANSWER: Hi Prashant,
Stamps are often used for school projects/assignments. The Scouts even have a stamp collecting badge. I think the American Philatelic Scoiety has a whole section dedicated to youth philately: http://stamps.org/Young-Philatelists and in Australia there is a section on the APF's website where you can download topical stamp albums: http://www.apf.org.au/collecting/albums.htm.
As an ex-high school teacher I agree that students aged 11-13 can learn a lot from using stamps in their assignment work.
Most countries have a youth developemnt officer who can help with information about youth collecting, a listing of philatelic federations can be found at: http://www.f-i-p.ch/

QUESTION: Dear Charles

Thank you.

Following is the Project Assignment thought mentioned from my end to be given to school children.

Project Assignment
-------------------

1. Collection of Maximum 10 and Minimum 5 Stamps each from America, Europe, Asia, Middle East, Africa regions from Internet.
2. Downloaded Stamp images will be pasted in Stamp Album into five different pages each for the above regions.
3. Description of each Stamp in two/three lines.

I require suggestions, inputs from your side.

Awaiting your reply,

Thanks & Regards,
Prashant S Akerkar

ANSWER: Hi Prashant,
The real question is "What do you want the students to learn?" Are they developing Internet skills? Is this a geography assignment? Do you want the students to become stamp collectors?
Why do they need to use a different page for each stamp if they are only going to write 2-3 lines? It would be better if you had say 5-7 questions to answer about each stamp and its region & country. e.g. What's its capital? What language is on the stamp? What currecy is used? etc.

QUESTION: Dear Charles

Thank you.

In our country, Postage Stamps are released after the demise of the Great People viz Freedom Fighters, Political Leaders, Business Leaders, Scientists, Artists, Sports Personalities etc apart from Historic places.

I Feel the Living Legends should be honored when they are alive by releasing their stamps because the honor received when the legends are alive is more than the person/s who is/are no more. This was my opinion.

1. Do stamps are released after demise of Great Personalities in your countries ?
2. Do you agree or differ in my opinion of "Stamps should be released for living legends and not after their demises". ?

Awaiting your reply,

Thanks & Regards,
Prashant S Akerkar

Answer
Hi Prashant,
In Australia, we used to have a similar policy regarding the living. The only exception was our Queen, however this policy changed a number of years ago. Now each year we have a set of stamps issued that are called "living legends".
