Question
1879 3 cent stamp
1879 3 cent stamp
Good morning. I was recently told this stamp in my scott album was an example of the rare 1879 3 cent  B grill stamp. Could you indenify the attached photo of stamp for me please? Thank you

Answer
Hi Jessica,
Thanks for the question,
Jessica, I'm afraid it is impossible to positively identify this stamp from a photo (from the photo it looks like a normal scott #64, I can't even see a grill), it requires very close inspection. I'm not sure who told you it is the rare "B", which is listed in the scott Catalog as Cat# 82 with the grill measuring 18mm x15mm and has 22 points x 18 points. It is extremely unlikely that you have a genuine copy, The catalog states there are only four known copies, and there have also been many fakes with added grills to the more common #64 to make them look like the much scarcer stamp. Unfortunately the only real way to get it positively identified is by a recognized stamp authentication service. Below is a list of some of them if after careful re-examination you still believe it to be a genuine "B" grill.
