Stamps (Philately)/Pony Express
I have come across a unperforated green stamp $2. It has Pony Express across the top and Wells Fargo along the bottom. It has a rider on a horse in the centre. Its in good condition with a, I think a post mark on the top.
USA is not my colleting interest and I came across the stamp in an old album.
Has it a value?
ANSWER: Hi Gerry,
Thanks for the question,
Gerry, without a picture it took a little searching, but I believe what you have is a Local stamp. This is listed in the Scott Specialized Catalog as Cat# 143L4. First the good news, the listed values are $275 for unused and $2000 for a genuine used example with a legible cancel. Now for the bad news, unfortunately this area of collecting has been heavily counterfeited, so most of these go for only a small fraction of catalog value unless they can be verified as genuine. If you would like to send it to a service for authentication then do a follow-up and I will provide a list of accepted services for you.
Thanks again for the question,

QUESTION: Hi Mike
Thanks again for the answer. The stamp was in a very very old album I was given by a friend. The other stamps are very old as well and I would be surprised if it was a counterfeit.
How should I go forward is there a authentication company you would recommend in the US or am I better trying here in the United kingdom
Below is a list of accepted expertization services. I Believe they start somewhere around $30 plus postage, but all the info is on their sites.
Gerry, another thing I should mention is even with a good certificate they usually will not sell for the listed values. Retail values usually range from 30-70% depending on condition and demand.
The American Philatelic Society has a service
Professional Stamp Experts
The Philatelic Foundation
Probably the cheapest and fastest service at the moment.
Thanks again and good luck,
