Question
I have a partial wrapper that measures 3 1/4 by 1 1/4 inches the imprint reads Wells Fargo & Co.  1/2 ounce paid from St. Joseph to  Placerville per Pony Express .Red print on off white paper.I am trying to find out what the value of this item is.Thanks.

Answer
Wells, Fargo Type K
Wells, Fargo Type K
Lacking a picture, I can only guess.  Sounds like the type K Wells, Fargo frank which was printed on envelopes specially made by Nesbitt on extra thin, tough paper.  This is known on a variety of Scott # U40, the 10-cent yellow green Washington envelope from the 1861 Nesbitt contract.  The imprint alone has negligible value but may be of interest to a Pony Express or Wells, Fargo specialist.  Now, if you had the entire envelope you might have been able to afford a luxurious night out.

There are two entires pictured on the Philatelic Foundation site:

There are no recent auction results for any value comparison.
