Stamps (Philately)/Scott 1470 omitted color(s)
Have a copy of Scott 1470 Tom Sawyer….familiar with color shifts, but I have one that appears to have a color or two missing. Not sure, but seems that yellow, tan and maybe one shade of red is missing. I have attached a photo showing the error alongside a color shift and normal copy.
Any info would be much appreciated. Thank you!
Thanks for the question and clear pictures.
Gary, there are a couple of major color omitted errors listed in the Scott Catalog.
The first is Cat# 1470b with the red (8c) and black engraving omitted.
The other is Cat 1470c with the yellow and tan (more of a greyish tan) litho. omitted.
Unfortunately yours would not be either of these, it appears yours is missing the yellow and red lithography.
Because yours is a used copy it makes it quite easy to alter. I'm afraid somebody was just playing with some chemicals to remove these colors from the stamp, as they are two of the easier colors to alter/remove.
Sorry I wish I had better news but this has no value except as a curiosity, and is actually a dangerous fake to the uninformed collector. If this is offered for sale it should have "altered" written in ink on the reverse.
Thanks again for the question,
